Adoption Plan

A draft adoption plan (pdf) is available for review. This document is concerned with adoption at all stages in the information life-cycle from initial coding in HEps through to use in Core Sector Bodies.

We invite stakeholders to respond as follows.

Higher Education Providers are invited to complete a short questionnaire to gauge readiness for HECoS adoption. It will be helpful to review the Guide to Using HECoS (pdf) document before completing the questionnaire, since that document will clarify some points of potential impact.

All stakeholders are invited to comment on the recommendation in the draft governance model which proposes a limited role for the governing body in the adoption process.
Recommendation 20: The HECoS governing body should produce and disseminate appropriate documentation and training materials, including authoritative best practice and implementation guides, to ensure that HECoS is used accurately and consistently.

All stakeholders are invited to comment on matters raised by the draft adoption plan with whatever focus they find relevant.

Please see the How to Participate page for orientation towards the consultation process.

  1. As others have said elsewhere we feel that a presumed mapping between JACS and HECoS is essential to provide consistency in the transition and minimise the work of conversion.

  2. We would not see the recommendation to ‘produce and disseminate appropriate documentation and training materials, including authoritative best practice and implementation guides’ as a limited role. In our minds it is a major role and needs careful consideration and management.

  3. In terms of the adoption plan it would be useful to see some worked scenarios in relation to the implementation and how it impacts on the UCAS / HESA cycles and external reporting:
    – For example at what point would the codes be implemented in terms of the recruitment year of entry. How would this tie in to the KIS return reporting for recruitment for the same period.
    – Similarly how will it affect and be managed for groups which provide external reports which rely on the JACs code a s a driver e.g. league tables.
